He keeps his pick slanted so that the fat part of the pick is always pointing down towards the floor, and never changes it. He never sweeps up (two upstrokes in a row) because he maintains a downward pick slant. I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I think OP is an economy picker (as apposed to strict alternate picker), which might explain the hitchhiker's thumb. So what I'm getting at is if I wonder if the hitchhikers thumb is a natural product of economy picking, especially when down sweeping. Something about the hitchhikers thumb just helps cut through the strings quickly when sweeping. Sweeping those parts is a lot smoother ones you get it down, which is what Eric does. The intro of Cliffs for example has a lot of those if you want to see what I'm referring to. Playing Eric Johnson with strict alternate picking is a pain in the ass though because he has a ton of fast phrases where he picks just a single note on a string, which kind of tangles up your picking hand. For strict alternate picking, it's the definitely the best way. I don't have to pick very hard, so there's less tension. You're right that fully extended does feel a lot looser. It takes ages to master this song and I'd say you did a great job as is! Consider my criticisms tho, it'll make you sound even better :D It sounds like your economy picking is good tho :P I do however, recommend using a backing track w/o guitar so not only you can hear yourself much better when looking for things to improve on, but your audience hears your own playing. It makes it a bit harder to actually critique your playing when EJ is playing with you in the background. I found you were out of sync at times, just keep working on it and you'll find your groove.ģ) You're playing over the original track. It works for sure, but playing it this way gives the individual notes a lot more punch and intonation and it's more true to the original.Ģ) The solo. I used to play it the same way you did when I first learned this song. See this tab for reference (just for the shuffle part, I find that all of the ultimate guitar versions are wrong): Instead of using pull offs on the G string, EJ picks the g's (5th fret on d string) and fingerpicks the other notes on the e and b strings. I did notice a couple of things though.ġ) The way you play the fast shuffles 0:30 and the rest. Really good tone, very well played overall.
